If you practice for ten years, you may begin to please yourself, after twenty years you may become a performer and please the audience, after thirty years you may please even your guru, but you must practice for many more years before you finally become a true artist.
Then you may please even God!

Who We Are

All Pakistan Music Conference (APMC), Karachi, is a registered not-for-profit that came into existence to give a much needed boost to the traditional arts in our society.

Through our work, we hope to contribute towards:

  • Developing a rich & ongoing cultural tradition around the classical arts in Karachi
  • Enhancing the learning, practice, viewing, listening and appreciation of classical arts
  • Creating a community that values its classical arts & works to preserve them

The story so far...

By the 90s, the state had nearly withdrawn all support for classical music. More popular genres like Ghazal, qawwali, folk, etc. had taken its place. National television and radio had no programming for the genre. In Pakistani society, there was a marked change of tastes influenced by a highly commercialized media, which brought an end to structures of patronage within society.

In such an inhospitable environment for the classical genre, generational musicians stopped transferring knowledge to their children. Stylistic schools of the genre (called gharanas), whole traditions of instrument-playing, -with them, allied traditions of instrument makers started disappearing. This is when a motley crew of music enthusiasts got together to ponder on the weighty task of reviving the classical arts, and thus The All Pakistan Music Conference, Karachi came into being in 2004.

The initial years of APMC Karachi were spent creating an energized calendar of events that gave exposure to the practitioners of traditional music and dance. We focused on nurturing both the artists and the audiences. Festivals and regular baethaks, all free and open for public, were hosted in which esteemed maestros of classical music were invited out of the shadows to perform before an audience. Thus a much-needed space was created to revive public interest. As our processes became more streamlined, we diversified our content to include folk music and semi-classical genres as a means to reach wider audiences.

The Story

The vacuum which had existed in Karachi’s cultural scenario ensured that APMC Karachi’s events were well attended and received, and a genre to which the media and state institutions had almost shut their doors suddenly experienced a renewed bloom. An archive of performances and recordings of the artists, were also made available at first in CD form and then freely through APMC Karachi’s social media channels.

All of APMC Karachi’s efforts were (and continue to be) based on the belief that cultural wealth is the right of every individual and an appreciation of culture is integral to a healthy society.

After establishing its foothold in Karachi’s cultural calendar, APMC Karachi turned its attention to deeper, long-term projects for the sustenance of the art forms. Its Youth initiative ‘Murki’ aiming to  involve  and inform the younger generation about our rich cultural heritage and the ‘Living Masters’ project which documents cultural memory, present situation, as well as dreams and aspirations around traditional music and dance forms through performances, conversations and interactions with present practitioners and related stakeholders, were launched in 2017 and 2020 respectively.

With more such initiatives in the pipeline we look forward to this next phase of our work, deeper engagement with artists and audiences and wider outreach.

There are many ways to the Divine. I have chosen the ways of song, dance, and laughter.
